An exceptional opening and launch for this 21st Festival Éclats d’Émail Jazz Edition.
Originally from New Orleans, Sonny Gullage grew up in a world where every note resonates with history. His father, Tony Gullage, played alongside Dr. John and Henry Butler; his grandmother, Sister Alberta Gullage, was already recording gospel in the 1960s. He is even related to the legendary Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter. In the Gullage family, music is not a profession—it is a legacy.

At the age of 12, Sonny wrote his first song, deeply affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. That early maturity has never left him. His style combines rare sensitivity with an instinctive understanding of human emotions. His piano playing tells as much as his words. He does not simply play—he confides.

In January 2024, he signed with the famed Blind Pig Records label, an iconic name in the blues world under the direction of Jeff Schroedl. His debut album, Go Be Free, co-produced by Tom Hambridge (producer of Buddy Guy), was released on 23 August. He invited the flamboyant Christone “Kingfish” Ingram to join him on it—proof that the future of the blues is being built together. Critics are unanimous: this is a masterful first album.

At just 26 years old, Sonny has already established himself on major international stages. He perfectly embodies the new wave of blues—respectful of tradition yet resolutely modern, inspiring, and filled with universal emotion. Lively on stage, subtle at the keyboard, and authentic in his words, he is already shaping today’s musical landscape—and tomorrow’s.
