Oscar Teruel was born and raised in the southern Alps. He began music at the age of 4 at the conservatoire in Digne-les-Bains and soon developed a strong interest in jazz and improvisation. After two years at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Aix-en-Provence, where he obtained his diploma, he entered the CNSMD in Paris in 2022, studying in particular with Paul Lay and Pierre de Bethmann. Influenced by pianists such as Brad Mehldau, Herbie Hancock, and Ahmad Jamal, he moves between tradition and modernity. In 2023, he won the jury’s special prize at the Chorus international jazz piano competition in Lausanne.

He is drawn to and fascinated by the current New York scene. With double bassist Anthony Jouravsky and drummer Jules Wallemme, he forms a trio with a strong personality. Through Oscar Teruel’s compositions, the group offers energetic and raw music, encouraging constant interaction between the three musicians. Together, they explore the different ideas suggested by the compositions and by the present moment, enjoying the freedom of dialogue reminiscent of the trios of Gerald Clayton or Jason Moran. The group seeks to escape the instrumental and sonic limitations that the trio format can impose, blending lyricism and improvisation. His appearance at the 20th Festival Éclats d’Émail Jazz Edition left a very strong impression on the audience who came to discover him at the BFM Centrale.

MASTERCLASS WITH BENJAMIN BOBENRIETH – GUITARIST

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 – 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM – JEAN GAGNANT CULTURAL CENTER

A session focused on Gypsy guitar with Benjamin BOBENRIETH, in collaboration with MUSIC PASSION:

To play and replay… but also to create and compose in a repertoire where few musicians venture onto new paths and new themes. Benjamin Bobenrieth dares, develops, and offers something new. An admirer and devotee of the Gypsy tradition, he proudly carries forward the legacy of his masters and has absorbed it deeply in order to express a first personal, invigorating mark, full of virtuosic tension.
The support and close collaboration of his musicians always create the setting for this surprising, dynamic, and very contemporary sharing.
Lyricism, charm, power, inventiveness, flexibility, generosity: it is all there, with a deep sound, precise bending, and an unstoppable rhythm.
Alongside his activities as a musician, Benjamin published, in late 2013, an article on Django REINHARDT in “Cahiers du Jazz” (Éditions Outre Mesure) and published a collection of scores and transcriptions of Django’s Music orchestral pieces with Presses Universitaires du Mirail.
More recently, Benjamin created the TOULOUSE DJANGO FESTIVAL with a few friends and colleagues; its first edition took place in November 2024 over four days and sold out. It has since been renewed, much to the delight of enthusiasts.

5. Depending on levels, one or two groups will be formed.

The program:
1. The history of this music and its guitars
2. Guitar technique specific to the Django and Gypsy jazz style, for both right and left hands
3. Improvisation and vocabulary
4. Rhythmic and swing aspects
The whole session will be divided into two parts, with a workshop in the second part of the afternoon to work together on one or more pieces in this style.

MASTERCLASS WITH SAMY THIEBAULT & EMILIE ARIDON KOCIOLEK – SAXOPHONIST & PIANIST

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25 – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM – ESPACE NORIAC

Take part in an exceptional masterclass during the Festival Éclats d’Email Jazz Edition, in collaboration with the store Un Vent de Passion and Manufacture Selmer Paris.

Join Samy Thiébault (saxophones) and Émilie Aridon Kociolek (piano) for a unique day. Inspired by their latest album, which blends jazz and classical music, they will lead an orchestral masterclass open to musicians from the second cycle onward. Wind instruments (brass and woodwinds), strings, drums, guitars, and jazz or classical pianists are invited to explore this musical encounter. Scores will be sent in advance.

At the end of the day, around 4:00 PM, a public presentation at Espace Noriac will showcase the work accomplished.

The masterclass is also open to the public all day and free for everyone.

Samy Thiebault

Born in Côte d’Ivoire, Samy Thiébault followed a classical path at the CNR of Bordeaux before entering the jazz class at the CNSM in Paris in 2004. He graduated in 2008. Alongside his musical studies, he earned a master’s degree in philosophy with highest honors and unanimous distinction at the Sorbonne in 2001. “Blues For Nel” was released in 2004, followed regularly by

“Gaya Scienza” in 2007 and “Upanishad Experiences” in 2010. “Clear Fire” appeared in 2013, as he began important collaborations in dance, theater, and cinema.

The dance performance “Les Autres Sois” in 2022, Nadir Moknèche’s film “L’Air de la mer” in 2023, which won the “France Musique / Sacem” award for best film score of the year, and Édouard Tissot’s medium-length film “En Son Absence” in 2014.

The 2015 release of “Feast Of Friends,” a tribute to The Doors, marked a major turning point in Samy’s career and led him to invite the outstanding trumpeter Avishai Cohen for his album “Rebirth” in 2016. “Caribbean Stories” was released in 2018, the first part of a triptych on creolization, followed by “Symphonic Tales” in 2019 with the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne as the second part, nominated for the Victoires du Jazz in the Best Album category, and concluded in 2021 with “Awe,” recorded across the world.

Named a “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” in 2024, he released his tenth album, “In Waves,” blending his love of the Ocean, music as a sacred art, and encounters. It is an initiatory journey that received strong critical acclaim (Jazznews cover, Jazzmag Choc, selections among the best albums of the year on TSF and Télérama…) and led to an extensive tour taking this multicultural group to major European and international stages.

 

Emilie Aridon Kociolek 

Introduced to music at a very early age within her family, Emilie Aridon-Kociołek gave her first recital in Poland at the age of 9 in the town of Żywiec. Her early career was shaped by the teaching of Denis Pascal at the CNR of Rueil-Malmaison, Pierre Réach, Éric Le Sage, and Paul Meyer at the CNR of Paris, and marked by several awards in various national and international competitions in France and abroad.

In 2010, she was unanimously admitted to the CNSMDP in Michel Béroff’s class; she also studied with Claire Désert, Bertrand Chamayou, Romano Pallottini, Laurent Cabasso, Macha Belooussova, and Sébastien Vichard, graduating in 2015 with a master’s degree.

Passionate about contemporary creation and committed from the beginning to choosing the broadest possible repertoire, her encounter with tango and pianist Gustavo Beytelmann gave decisive momentum to her career. Today, Emilie Aridon-Kociołek performs in various  projects, including Quinteto Respiro, Quinteto Emedea, Ensemble Carabanchel, Ensemble Icosikaihenagone, Ensemble 2e2m, and Ensemble Octetology, and alongside artists such as Agnès Jaoui, Philippe Cohen Solal, Minino Garay, Javier Estrella, Benjamin Duboc, and Fernando Fiszbein.

She has had the opportunity to perform as a soloist with Quinteto Respiro alongside the Orchestre National de Lille and the Orchestre National de Lyon. In 2021, she was invited by bandoneonist William Sabatier to record a transcription of Astor Piazzolla’s Double Concerto “Hommage à Liège” with the Orchestre Dijon-Bourgogne conducted by Leonardo Garcia-Alarcón for the Fuga Libera label. That same year, she received two awards at the Piazzolla Music Competition, with Quinteto Respiro (gold medal) and Quinteto Emedea (bronze medal).

In September 2022, at the initiative of the Pantonale Festival, she performed for the first time with Quinteto Respiro at the Berlin Philharmonie alongside vibraphonist Lucas Dorado. The 2022-2023 season for Emilie Aridon-Kociołek was marked by the release of Volume II with Ensemble Icosikahienagone on Dark Tree Records, the recording of a Mussorgsky / Beytelmann album with Quinteto Respiro and vibraphonist Lucas Dorado on Ruta Records, a Piazzolla album with Quinteto Respiro on Parma Recording, and the revival of the repertoire of the Octeto Buenos Aires with Ensemble Octetology.
