The career of the Cameroonian bassist and singer is enough to send a thrill through jazz musicians across the globe. Meanwhile, the Cuban pianist is Quincy Jones’s protégé. Alfredo Rodríguez’s richly blended sonorities and the groove of the brilliant Richard Bona will come together here in a very special event.
Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin, Stevie Wonder, Harry Belafonte, Herbie Hancock, Salif Keita… the list of Richard Bona’s collaborations is dizzying. Between New York and Paris, he carries his unique style, standing at the crossroads of countless influences (jazz, bossa, pop, afro-beat, traditional songs, funk…). He has given African music a new, truly universal dimension.
Alfredo Rodríguez left Cuba and his family in 2009 to settle in the United States in order to pursue his dream: to work alongside Quincy Jones, who had already endorsed him at their very first meeting three years earlier at the Montreux Jazz Festival. It was an immediate musical love at first sight for the producer and the young pianist. Trained in the rigorous classical conservatoires of Havana, he draws as much inspiration from Bach and Piazzolla as from Afro-Cuban rhythms infused with jazz. A meteoric, freedom-loving journey for this cosmopolitan virtuoso with contagious energy.
The meeting between Richard Bona and Alfredo Rodríguez on the stage of the Opéra de Limoges had been wished for a long time; now the time has come to spark it into life. A rare fusion at the crossroads of cultures and emotions.
