GoGo Penguin, the Manchester trio that blends jazz, classical, and electronic influences in its own singular way, returns with a striking new album, Necessary Fictions. We once again find pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Jon Scott, exploring their inner selves in depth in order to reach “what we believe to be our essential and authentic qualities at this precise moment in time.”
This search leads them to some of their boldest compositions to date, incorporating modular synthesizers, the Moog Grandmother, and electric bass into their sound. In this way, they move brilliantly between acoustic instrumentation and electronica propelled by the drums.
Sincere and hard-hitting, the repertoire of Necessary Fictions presents the group at its very best.
