Fascinated by the discovery of music connected to Spanish popular tradition (notably Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez) and by certain expressions of the country’s cultural heritage (such as flamenco and religious processions), trumpeter Miles Davis offered his own intense and poetic vision of it in Sketches of Spain, a masterpiece that marked jazz’s opening to world music. An emancipated disciple of his glorious elder, Erik Truffaz has become one of the leading figures of electro-jazz trumpet, whose creativity has never waned. His meeting with flamenco singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana—a true phenomenon that French audiences have discovered and appreciated in recent years—was bound to lead to an ambitious project: to offer their contemporary vision of these “Sketches of Spain”, whose genius has travelled across the decades. A major event on the occasion of the centenary of Miles Davis’s birth, this Prince of Darkness who found the light in the land of Cervantes and García Lorca.
