His only time in Limoges goes back to the Jazz En Limousin Festival in 1991 in the Grand Théatre … and this year his will be one of the most expected concerts of our 20th Edition.

Philadelphia has been  the birthplace of many great musicians, among whom one of the undisputed masters of jazz piano : Kenny Barron, born in 1943. As a teenager, he starts playing professionally in Mel Melvin’s orchestra. Still in high school, Kenny works with drummer Philly Joe Jones at age 19, he moves to New York City and works freelance with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody, after the tenor saxophonist had heard him play at the Five Spot. Then, in Dizzy Gillespie’s group, Kenny develops his taste for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. After five years with Dizzy, Barron plays with Freddy Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson and Buddy Rich. In the early 70s, Kenny joins Yusef Lateef whom he considers as a key-influence in his art of improvisation.  Encouraged by Lateef to pursue his university studies, Barron alternates touring and studying and graduates in music at the Empire State College. In 1973, Kenny joins the Rutgers University faculty as a teacher in music, a position he holds until 2000, supervising numerous young talents of today, in particular David Sanchez, Terence Blanchard and Regina Bell. In 1974, Kenny records under the Muse label his first album, “Sunset to Dawn”, the first of over 40 recordings as leader. Throughout the 80s, Barron collaborates with great saxophone player Stan Getz, touring with his quartet and recording several legendary albums. Still during the 80s, he co-founds the Sphere quartet with Buster Williams, Ben Riley and Charlie Rouse. Kenny Barron’s own recordings on the Verve label earned him nine nominations at the Grammy Awards. Whether  solo , trio or quintet, Kenny Barron is internationally renowned as a master performer and composer.

It is not an everyday event that one has the opportunity to hear a living music legend: the Kenny Barron Trio. It is the most elegant and lyrical jazz that one can imagine, delicately mixed with Latin and Caribbean rhythms. Come and take the time to enjoy this formation, a unique one on the jazz planet… This is THE appointment.
