With « Golden Cages », Faada Freddy breaks a long period of discographic silence. For the past seven years, the Senegalese singer has released nothing since “Gospel Journey”, an album that had earned him unanimous praise from the press, a nomination at the 2016 Victoires de la Musique and a stage success with almost 300 concerts. This new album is however part of a continuity. Going back to the bias of “Gospel Journey”, it is based on a device where voice, hand clappings, body percussions are the only elements. All the rhythms and instrument sounds have been produced by the mouth or the body in an approach that is at odds with the modern methods of recording controlled by computers and software tools. Faada’s voice is surrounded by a vocal quintet composed of Manu Vince, Marion Cassel, Philippe Aglaé, Jean-Marc Lerigab and Martin Gamet, each one of them in a distinctive tone that gives the whole warmth and harmonic richness.
“My music is 100% organic, of human origin, and 0% of technological origin” Faada claims. Before he adds: “though I use this aesthetics specific to Gospel, the music is actually pop soul.”
“Golden Cages” offers original tracks that Faada has written, composed, produced in an absolute act of freedom. Or of non-servitude could we say, since the song that gives the album its title seems so much inspired by La Boëtie’s famous Discourse on Volontary Servitude … “We live in a society that’s all about standardization of thoughts, acceptance and submission, the singer sums up. Artificial intelligence makes us slowly slide into a lack of reflection at the risk of a widespread dehumanization. We neglect our intellectual and cognitive skills. We allow ourselves to be locked in what I call “golden cages.” The non-artificial approach of “Golden Cages” reacts to this forgetfulness of freedom. So let’s get together, all of us, physically present at this exceptional evening.
