Following Corey Harris’s trip to Mississippi and to Western Africa, the film shows us the origins of blues in the delta of the great American river, and its kinship with the traditional musics of Mali and Niger. Martin Scorcese offers us a trip from the banks of the River Niger, in Mali, to the cotton fields and the fixed-up backrooms of the Mississippi delta in order to trace the roots of blues. He delivers a lyrical cocktail of original performances (including those by Ali Farka Touré, Salif Keita, Taj Mahal) and extremely rare archival images.
