In the tradition of the great African-American musicians, Steve Coleman transcends the boundaries of Jazz. An exceptional saxophone player, composer and artist of a curious nature, federator of outstanding work for over 2 decades, Steve Coleman is above all an enthusiast of sound research, capable of partnering with the hip-hop scene as well as frequenting the Ircam.

Recognized as one of the most influential musicians of his generation and one of the most important saxophone players of the past thirty years, Steve Coleman, since the beginning of his career, has followed his own path, refusing any style or gender labelling. Infused with Charlie Parker as well as Ornette Coleman, he has imposed himself as one of the most distinctive voices of jazz saxophone. Co-founder of the M-BASE movement in the mid-80s, where soul intelligence met research, his harmonic conception, his work on rhythmic patterns, as well as his integration of funk and hip-hop have all influenced a great number of existing groups and made him a leading musician.
